2024 NM Hospitality Games Presented by GAHLA

Total Management Systems Secures New Mexico Hospitality Association Top HAT Award for Select Service Hotel of the Year

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023) – the management company with the most awards in New Mexico snags another award in 2023 for Select Service Hotel of the Year.

During the New Mexico Hospitality Association’s annual Top HAT Awards ceremony held at Sheraton Uptown in Albuquerque, Home2 Suites by Hilton Alamogordo White Sands was awarded with a Top HAT Award for Select Service Hotel of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding hotel that have not only shown dedication to their guests, but have also actively contributed to the growth of the New Mexico tourism, travel, and lodging industry as a whole.

The Home2 Suites Alamogordo White Sands recently won two awards during the last Hilton Leadership Conference held in Las Vegas, NV in August 2023. The awards include Award of Excellence and Highest Overall Breakfast Satisfaction.

Since the hotel’s opening in June 2021, the team worked hard on providing excellent customer service to their valued guests and being an active member of the community. The hotel has participated in numerous community activities which included clean up drive. As part of Total Management Systems, the hotel also choose an organization of their choice to help with every year.

2023 Annual Leadership Conference and 30 Years of Excellence Celebration

Total Management Systems, a hospitality management and development company, is excited to celebrate their 30th anniversary. While the organization’s roots began in 1980 when T.M. Sundaram purchased their first hotel in Gallup, the management and development company officially began in 1994. Now, they operate 11 properties in New Mexico and are positioned for future growth.

The company celebrated 30 Years of Excellence during 2023 Annual Leadership Conference with all leadership team across their hotel portfolio. The event was held at Home2 Suites by Hilton Albuquerque Downtown/University. A New Mexico State University’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management graduate, Kat continued to prosper at Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU and within Total Management Systems. She has been a valued asset in the company and is ready to help other hotels such as Hampton Inn & Suites Artesia, Home2 Suites Alamogordo White Sands, Best Western PLUS Executive Suites in Albuquerque.

Here are some questions we asked Kat.

 

What year and month did you start with TMS? What position?

“I started with TMS in February of 2021 as a front desk agent.”

 

Describe your journey within TMS.

“My journey with TMS started at the Courtyard as a front desk agent, after some time I was able to move up to Sales Coordinator and learn what hotel sales looked like, I enjoyed learning how to write contracts, make group blocks and everything that comes with sales. After a while our AGM and FOM were moving on to new paths and I was given an opportunity to learn operations as a Front Office Manager and Assistant General Manager from there, operations have always been my passion. I continue to look for new opportunities to learn how hotels operate, and how best to help hotels improve. TMS has given me the opportunities to go to other TMS hotel properties and about how the other hotel brands work, and what their standards are.”

 

Describe working with TMS.

“Working with TMS is great as they have a great team that is always willing to help you with questions and give the support you need when you are struggling. TMS has opportunities for associates to learn and grow and accomplish goals.”

 

What motivates you? What makes you successful?

“I am motivated by seeing little successes, from completing projects, to helping others accomplish their goals, or milestones. I think what makes me successful is that I enjoy the work I do, and I am always willing to learn something new, and don’t allow fear to stop me from trying something new.”

 

What would you advise other aspiring people to follow your footsteps?

“My advice for others is always look for ways to improve yourself by being willing to learn new things and try something that’s just outside your comfort zone.”

    1. March 21, 2022 – Sales Manager
  1. Describe your journey within TMS.
    1. TMS has offered me training and new opportunities at every turn. I have taken many classes to assist and further my knowledge of sales and marketing. I have had a wonderful mentor from the beginning. It never mattered how big or small the question.
  1. Describe working with TMS.
    1. I have truly enjoyed working with the team at TMS. Every member of the team truly encompasses “we’ve got your back!” This is the most family and team-oriented company I have ever worked with.
  1. What motivates you? What makes you successful?
    1. My motivation is to succeed and be the best possible version of myself. The “thing” that makes me so successful is my ability to adapt and grow. I enjoy puzzles and problem solving and really when it comes down to it that’s all a hotel is. You “play” a game every day with rates, you “play” a game when it comes to filling the house, and when you over book the house you “play” musical rooms to fix the problem. Something I was told at a young age is “if you enjoy your work, you never work a day in your life.” This is very true, I got in to the hotel industry because my mom told me that I would enjoy it. Little did I know it would become my passion.
  1. What would you advise other aspiring people to follow your footsteps?
    1. If you are just starting out, take every step through every department. Learn how and what makes each department work. Why each department is important and how they all “fit” together to create a cohesive bond that holds the hotel together. Not only will this give you a better idea of how the hotel works, it will make you a stronger employee. If your boss needs help don’t, turn down the opportunity to help them. Use it as a learning opportunity.
  1. Any quotes to live by?
    1. The first is “Do or Do Not There is No Try.” – Yoda. I feel like this is so true, you are either going to succeed in life or not there is no middle ground. My second quote would have to be “You cannot cross a bridge you have not built, however never be afraid to burn bridges that no longer support you.” I have no idea who said this but, I feel like it is very true and believe me I have never been afraid to torch a bridge! My last quote is “We’ll get there.” I love this quote because eventually, you will get where you are going. It may not be the path you wanted, but it got you where you needed to be.

Amy Miller brings 27+ years of experience in hospitality and named General Manager of the Year with Courtyard Marriott Select Brands in 2021, Hospitality Professional of the Year with NM Hospitality Association in 2022 and was General Manager of the Year with La Quinta Hotels in 2008. She sits on New Mexico State University’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management Board of Advisers, Las Cruces Public School Readiness Committee, and Secretary for NM Hospitality Association.
